Dear all,
I hope you are all well, Covid-free, and perhaps back in your offices (either the classic one or the home variant) and "behind the wheel" again.
Me, Olav and Olaf at Uninett have started preparing a new variant of our proposal for a Nordic collaboration project on end-to-end monitoring. We aim to have a first draft of our document ready by tomorrow.
We would very much like to have feedback, hence is doable for you to read through those few pages and join a quick online meeting on Thursday Aug 26th to give us your comments?
Calendar invitation with Zoom-link is incoming in separate email.

Dear all,
Even though we didn't manage to get direct feedback from you before todays NORDUnet CAG-meeting, we submitted the attached pre-project proposal to CAG.
Based on you enthusiasm about Uninett Microdep monitoring system from our meeting earlier this year, we hoped to get funding apoorved for this small pre-project.
Feedback from CAG today is that the amount of funding requested (~€ 40 000) is realistic, however not before each partner can commit in contributing the no of hours suggested.
So... we now need names of people who can commit to work those (few) hours asked for in the pre-project proposal.
A single sentence summary of the proposal: Collaborative work were all nordic NRENs and NORDUnet add monitoring nodes (linux boxes) and "play around" with the current Microdep system Uninett is operating (a multi-tenant variant of the map presented), and generate a plan for future upscaling and added features.
Who can find time this autumn (which then may beinvoiced to NORDUnet) according to the budget suggested? I.e Uninett 200hrs, Funet 40hrs, Sunet 20hrs, DeiC 20hrs, NORDUnet 60hrs .
Please look at the proposal and give us feedback.
Best regards Otto

Dear all,
I received very little response (none) on my previous message (with attachment) which I assume is simply because your are a busy group of people.
To make responding easier I've prepare a compact poll which aim to clarify how further collaboration may take place.
So... please, can you find 1 min to fill in the following poll? https://framadate.org/hHh6GUSQU1sqgmC6

Hi
Projects like Perfsonar, Ripes atlas probes, NLNOG ring all tries to solve network connectivity issues. I do not have all the information about this project to know what the big advantage this project has over the current ones and by that be able to say if I'm willing to commit time? Also what function is it suppose to have? - Detect errors and create alarms - Debug tool for active problems - Post mortem analytics - Community Network Maintenance redundancy compliance They all have different demands of a system.
As the mailing list was malfunction I think I never got those few pages that was mentation in the beginning of the mail. Do you have a link to them, it might clarify the project?
Kindly Magnus

Hi,
Thanks for response.
Attached is a new copy of the pre-project proposal we are attempting to get acceptance for.
There are indeed other measurement project, however they tend to focus mostly on collection of measurements. They also tend to be rather conservative with respect to sampling frequencies, i.e. rather few and infrequent measurements (e.g. ripe atlas, due to lightweight nodes and large scale). Higher frequency sampling tends to be done seldom and on demand (e.g. via perfsonar).
Uninett's system is (an has been for a decade now) sampling end-to-end network state base on continuos flows of 100 packets per second. Hence more suttle glitches and undesirable tendencies in the network may be detected early. More importantly the system analyse the data collected and extracts relevant events, which again may generate alarms. Datasets are made available for browsing and further manual analysis via a big-data-browsing tool (currently Elastic search with Kibana web-frontend).
So I whould claim "yes" to all you pins below (even thought I'm a bit unsure what Community Network Maintenance redundancy compliance mean...)
Hope this is helpful.

Hi
Projects like Perfsonar, Ripes atlas probes, NLNOG ring all tries to solve network connectivity issues. I do not have all the information about this project to know what the big advantage this project has over the current ones and by that be able to say if I'm willing to commit time? Also what function is it suppose to have?
- Detect errors and create alarms
- Debug tool for active problems
- Post mortem analytics
- Community Network Maintenance redundancy compliance
They all have different demands of a system.
As the mailing list was malfunction I think I never got those few pages that was mentation in the beginning of the mail. Do you have a link to them, it might clarify the project?

Hi yet again,
The list might not have been funny operational, but is hopefully now.
I kindly ask you **all* (including others from Uninett) to fill in the following form: https://framadate.org/hHh6GUSQU1sqgmC6
Note that this is NOT about a meeting. I want to measure to what extent the nordic community is interested in and may contribute to Uninett's Microdep end-to-end meaurement system.
I've added "observer" and "not interested" as option too now. Please respond.
Thanks

To make responding easier I've prepare a compact poll which aim to clarify how further collaboration may take place.

I didn't know of about Nlnog - seamingly an inter domain debug environment ?
I would be interested in seeing the traceroute visualization stuff.
We are also working to analyze traceroutes to find outage events like network unreachables and loss of connection.
We had a student look at traceroute anomaly detection this summer.. We could have detected the loss of some prefixes on august 10 within a minute or two and reported, because we had an Amazon US node in our network.
Cheers
